Australian cancer survivor and expert in meditation and mind-body medicine, Dr Ian Gawler, is currently in the country running a range of events on stress relief, relaxation, and meditation to improve health for those with cancer.

Dr Gawler survived bone cancer in the 1970s and set up the Gawler Foundation in Australia to provide people with options for improved health through mind-body techniques, such as meditation.

The Gawler Foundation now offers a number of retreats for people with serious illnesses, including cancer.  The Foundation’s seven essential health principals include:

  • good nutrition
  • regular meditation
  • positive thinking
  • emotional healing
  • quest for meaning
  • moderate exercise
  • effective support

Dr Gawler is in New Zealand with his wife Ruth until the end of the month and is running a number of retreats and giving a number of public talks.

 Events include:

  • CANCER and BEYOND – a five day Residential Follow-up Programme
Wanaka - Monday, November 18 at 11:00am until Friday, November 22 at 2:00pm

This programme is specifically designed for those with cancer, along with their support people who have attended a previous Canlive or Gawler Foundation program

Over the years, Drs Ian and Ruth Gawler have led many cancer-related programmes together. This is the first residential program they have presented in New Zealand specifically for people dealing with cancer.  It will include sessions on nutrition, exercise, positive thinking, pain management, meditation, healing and balancing medical options.

A key question is how much is enough? How much attention to these things is most advisable for someone in the active phase of healing? What about when you are in remission? And what about the family?
